movies on the brain

I've seen most of the buzzed about movies of 2007 except one. if i miraculously get better by tomorrow, i hope to catch a matinee.

here is an wikipedia exerpt:

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is a translation of the French memoir Le scaphandre et le papillon by journalist Jean-Dominique Bauby. It describes what his life is like after suffering a massive stroke that left him with a condition called Locked-In syndrome.

The entire book was written by Bauby blinking his left eyelid. An amanuensis repeatedly recited a frequency-ordered alphabet (E, L, A, O, I, N, S, D ...), until Bauby blinked to choose the next letter. The book took about 200,000 blinks to write and each word took approximately two minutes. The book chronicles everyday events and what they are like for a person with locked-in syndrome. These events include playing at the beach with his family, getting a bath, and meeting visitors. The book was published in March, 1997. It received excellent reviews and sold 150,000 copies in the first week. Two days after the French version of the book was published, Bauby died.

trip

did i mention my love for st. helena?

after st. helena, we stayed a night in a town called calistoga (which is about 5miles north of st. helena).

today's event included the armstrong redwoods national preserve, guerneville, the petrified forest, graeser winery, and my favorite- old faithful geyser. At the old faithful geyser, we started off with a discount because of our AAA card. Once inside the tourist trap, there were cute little baby goats and llama's!

we ended our stay with some shopping at dean and deluca in st. helena and another stop at the bv winery. we learned some new tricks about wine tasting so i'll teach you sometime.

around noonish we headed out of napa county and drove down to berkeley. it is a quiant town and the houses near cal are amazing! we had lunch in berkeley and decided to head to our hotel in san francisco. we had reservations at the chancellor hotel in union square (right across the street from sak's!). I did like our hotel very much.. the interior was fantastic (internet, green walls and dark wood).

our stay in san francisco was a bit frustrating because of the weather. we landed there during the worst rainstrom in a long time (these are news reports saying this).

night one we had dinner at cafe claude which is a french cafe downtown. it was chic and the waitstaff and host were all french which felt all the more authentic. I ordered bordeaux of course and we shared frites, onion soup, a tuna tartare, and a chicken dish. everything was quite nice.

happy 2008!!

we will be spending the next couple of days in a little town called st. helena. st. helena is a super beautiful place. i asked adam if we could do this every year and he agreed that we should.

we ended up in napa in the afternoon, rested a few hours and got ready for our new years eve celebration at Press (www.presssthelena.com). we had a six course meal with dom perignon champagne. dinner was amazing and our bill was omg.. the largest bill i have ever seen in my life. adam paid a five hundred thirty dollars for our dinner. it was so extravagant, i think we will eat our leftovers tonight.

i'll update more later..

coastal trip so far

adam and i started our trip at 7a sunday morning (i wanted to leave at 5a..). Our first stop was in San Luis Obispo(we had breakfast and drove through cal poly university).

our next stop was elephant seals at piedras blancas. they are sooo huge! when one sits up, it is six feet tall! it really is an amazing sight! please excuse the exclamation points but it really was magnificent.

we then ended up in ragged point to fill up on gas ($60 gas), ran into a celebrity (one of the sweet valley high twins in a porche).

next up we hit the winding roads in big sur, giving sayaka car sickness because of the height and adam's fast driving (jk). we stopped at the henry miller museum and had lunch at nepenthe. thanks for the recommendation, it was sooo good! i had an ambrosia hamburger and adam had a cream of mushroom soup. For dessert we shared a apple pie a la mode.

we ended the night in carmel and proceeded our trip to monterey. we had another expensive breakfast at the fish hopper($72). we both had a cup of clam chowder and i order a risotto and adam had a halibut.

here's adam touching the water in monterey.

our last tourist attration of the day is the mystery spot in santa cruz.

*edit: turns out when we saw brittany daniel with a black guy at ragged point, it was keenan ivory wayans in her cayenne! haha.
